                                                                                                                              (Self portrait)
His parents were American but he was trained to paint in Paris. Known for his portraits Singer Sargent was famous during his time.

personal friend of the Vanderbilts he often painted portraits of their family. He also stayed at the Biltmore often. His most famous work and personal favourite was his portrait labeled "Madame X." (Madame Pierre Gautreau) He sought out to paint her as opposed to the norm of many coming to him to be painted. He wrote to a mutual friend "I have a great desire to paint her portrait and have some reason to think she would allow it and is waiting for someone to propose this homage of her beauty... you might tell her I am a man of prodigious talent." It took well over a year to finish the portrait. The painting made him almost give up on art all together.

Sargent didn't just paint what the scene looked like.
He painted how it felt.
